Pair of paintings with ink on paper. Japan, 19th cent.
Relaxed, as also confidently placed, brushstrokes define the vertical plummeting cliff scene. Only the immediate foreground appears with black bushes to be more hilly. Perpendicular cascading waterfall and fog, which could also be water mist, in contrast to the grey walls and blackness. The right picture offers a village under the walls and many huts, all built on piles. Below respectively is the signature I-SEN-IN HO-GEN fude (painted by ...) 伊 川 院 法 眼 筆. "Hogen" is a title. Underneath is the red seal of the Kano School. Fine harmonious silk brocade mounting, ivory rollers, very good condition.
