Netsuke, ivory. Japan, Meiji, (1868 – 1912)
A figurative netsuke, in all intricate details very exactly crafted, depicting an actor. The man stands with one leg on a drum and holds a fan, as well as a small bell rattle, as used by storytellers. The mask on his head is of the "blower" Usofuki of the jester Hyottoko in the interlude theater Kyogen. Fine clothing decor, on back next to himotoshi is a hanging tobacco pouch. The signature SHO-MIN 正 民 with Kao on the bottom of the drum. Shomin was from the school of Ono Ryomin.
