Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
A detailed openworked round ryusa netsuke, depicting foliage and blossoms and offering a very compactly crafted composition. On the front is a crouched reclining rat nezumi, whose long tail runs down to the underside of the netsuke and bites into a radish. Very powerful, honey-brown patina beneath, cord channel running below through a stem. Very good preservation.
