Sakura wood. Japan, 19th cent.
Charming composition. Reclining "puppy", as these chubby dogs are called after the English name. Relaxed floppy ears and faithful look from inlaid eyes, fine and compactly carved fur alternating with smooth spots. In its jaws, the dog holds a straw sandal waraji. Signature beneath MASA-NAO 正 直, the artist is from the area Ise-Yamada. Cord channel is "natural" through one hindleg. Very good condition.
