Miniature-painting with colors and gold on paper. Northern India, Kashmir, around mid 19th cent.
Two folios, with particularly fine paintings from the writings of Bhagavadgita. The texts are in Sharada script. Depicted are a palace with Devaki, spouse of Vasudeva, sitting on a throne, who could also be an incarnation of Vishnu. On the floor in front of her is the blue Krishna with crown and jewelry, standing beside him the white Balarama, his brother. Behind Vasudeva is presumably the second mother of Balarama, named Rohini. Attractive ornamental border with generous gold, on the second page this decor is dominant and with Sharada script.
