Description A framed 16th c. Charter,
dated 22 February 1556/7 by James (Stewart), Commendator of Kelso and Melrose, in favour of John Cochrane and his heirs underwritten, of half a husbandland in Lessudden at present occupied by the said John Cochrane, together with its pertinents (excepting the fishing in the waters of the Tweed), signed by the Commendator, by Thomas Mercer, subprior, and by William Philp, John Hogart, David Hoppringill, John Watson, Bernard Bowston and Thomas Meyn with the seal (damaged) of Melrose Abbey.

Other Notes: James Stewart was an illegitimate son of King James V by Elizabeth Shaw. He was born about 1522 and was made Commendator (or titular) Abbot of Kelso Abbey in 1536 and of Melrose Abbey in 1541.
