Although void of surroundings and setting, the cat is complimented by two lines of the artist's poetry, the ropey brushstrokes echoing the cat's energetic mood. One-stroke paintings became a prevalent subject matter in Ding Yanyong's final years, and a second one-stroke cat, also dated 1978 and formerly in the collection of the artist's daughter was sold at Christies Hong Kong 1 June 2015 lot 1317.
