Drawing on Ming dynasty masters of calligraphy such as Chen Xianzhang (1428-1500) and Fu Shan (1607-1685), Pu Hua also integrated techniques of the 19th century Jinshi movement that sought inspiration from the earliest sources of the Chinese written language inscribed on metal and stone. Hence his calligraphy appears vigorous and energetic, with the jagged-edged strokes recalling a chisel cutting through stone.
