Wood with polychromic trace. This Lohan has strong features, underscored by vigorous incisions; sharp cheek bones, large well defined mouth, frowning eye brows under a knitted forehead; the protruding eyes are the evidence of mystical bliss. Whether they are holy men, monks or mere disciples of Buddha, luohans are presented as wise men who have fully realized within themselves the Buddhistic doctrine.
Provenance: Formerly with Jacques Barrere, Paris and illustrated in Sculptures d'Asie - catalogue 2004. Item No. 19.
