The two birds huddled side by side and looking askance at each other. The bill is wafer thin except towards the breasts of the birds, dictating the natural orientation of the whole netsuke. The eyes are inlaid in what looks like red horn, but may well be red material from the bill itself

The Natural History Museum, London, has made a tentative identification of the material as the beak of a helmeted hornbill (rhinoplax vigil)
