The clay fine and exquisite, the glaze smooth with a moist appearance, the finishing meticulous. The gently curving sides rising from a short slightly tapering foot, the exterior decorated in sgraffiato design, molded and carved, to reveal lower layer of the ground before firing. Depicted a harmony of descending phoenix and ascending dragon amongst flames and clouds, the rim containing a further invocation band of leafy tendril. The immaculate porcelain body covered with a characteristic silky glaze, pooling on the base slightly veiling the firing mark. The under base left unglazed revealed the pale-creme ground with grayish-brown and darker spots in the firing.
Dimension: 2" H x 14-5/8" Diam.
PROVENANCE: From the estate of a retired overseas director of a large package delivery corporation, this collection has been accumulated from all points on the globe. While some of the collection is eccentric it is also well diversified and truly valuable. We consider it a privilege to offer part of this collection at auction.
