China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century. Of silver depicting figures and auspicious symbols. This type of lock charm was meant to protect the wearers from harm, misfortune, and evil spirits, and to bless them with good luck, longevity, and a high rank. Usually this talisman was gifted young boys, to help "lock" them to the earth, to guard them from death.
