China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century. Of silvered metal depicting figures, floral designs and auspicious symbols. One of the charms worked in fine polychrome enamels. These type of lock charms were meant to protect the wearers from harm, misfortune, and evil spirits, and to bless them with good luck, longevity, and a high rank. Usually this talisman was gifted young boys, to help "lock" them to the earth, to guard them from death.
Condition: Good condition with some surface wear, oxidation and small dents. One with losses to enamel. Provenance: US private collection.
