China, late Qing. The Buddhist bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, in China called Guanyin, here as childbearing mother goddess with a boy on her lap. The goddess sits in rajalilasana in this depiction on a tall rocky base. Sie wears a tall hair bun covered by a scarf, jewelry on the chest and books at her side. The cheerful, naked boy holds a lotus bud on the stem.
