明治 靜美、乾玉款 象牙雕恵比須及大黑天
both lucky gods carved in rounded form, the Daikokuten with smiley expression looking upwards, hammer on his right hand and a bag over left shoulder, the base inscribed with a maker's signature, possibly Goky, on a red lacquer panel; the Ebisu with a fan on his right hand, fish on the left, a signature to his back, possibly Sei Shizuyoshi
(Qty: 2)
largest: 7cm high
Provenance: Private Edinburgh collection
Note: Daikokuten is the bringer of wealth and guardian of farmers. He is usually accompanied by a rat or rice bale. He is often partnered (as here) with Ebisu, the patron of honest labour and provider of daily sustenance for the worker, thus together depicting worldly prosperity.
