7 - Early 19th C English Red Seal Impressions mounted on bright green paper and numbered, the paper and seals affixed to 7 small mahogany trays; each now in a custom APF hand made gold leaf frame; together with the original 19th century manuscript booklet with each seal described and identified. Good condition. Height 9 1/4 inches (23.6 cm.) X width 13 1/8 inches (33.4 cm.). Note: As part of the early 19th Century's fascination with ancient Greece & Rome, numerous collections of carved hardstone seals were amassed by the Gentry and displayed in special "Medallion Cabinets." Many including William IV and later Queen Victoria made their seals available to be pressed into red sealing-wax and later into sulphur powder and then plaster. These collections of just the impressions of original seals are thought to be the origin of the Stamp collecting craze in the 1860's.
