The form of this ewer comes from Tibetan metalwork; because the top reminded Chinese patrons of the hats worn by Tibetan monks, it was given the name 'monk’s cap ewer' (sengmaohu).
The ewer is elegantly potted with a bulbous body raised on a short splayed foot, below a curved handle with a ruyi-head tab, decorated with dragons and phoenixes amongst clouds, flower sprays around the rim.
