拍品描述: Description Edward Chalmers Leavitt (American, 1842-1904). Still life of fruit and wine bottle, oil on canvas, 1895. Signed and dated on lower left. A wonderful 19th century French still life painting featuring an inviting spread of juicy pears, plump oranges, clusters or red and green grapes, and a bottle of red wine. Leavitt masterfully used trompe l'oeil effects to capture the various textures of the fruits as well as their reflections on the rich rosewood table. Foreshortening and atmospheric perspective also make for marvelous sense of depth and the illusion of three dimensionality. The frame is finely carved and complements the painting well. Chalmers is best known for his oil paintings of tabletop arrangements like this example - depicting fruit, flowers, fish, and game in a rather Baroque manner and with palpable details that appeal to the senses. Size (canvas): 29.3" W x 19.4" H (74.4 cm x 49.3 cm); (frame): 42.875" W x 32.875" H (108.9 cm x 83.5 cm) Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Edward Chalmers Leavitt studied with James Lewin, a member of the "Group of 1855" artists who promoted the arts in Providence. Some have noted that he also studied with master of Luminism Martin Johnson Heade during this Heade?s brief tenure in Providence. Leavitt would become Rhode Island?s most successful still-life artist during the nineteenth century.
