拍品描述: Description Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique, a bronze statue of Mercury (Greek Hermes) depicted as a handsome, athletic, beardless youth with two of his characteristic attributes - a winged petasos (broad-brimmed traveler's hat) and a chlamys - seated upon a large bird - either an eagle which was much beloved by the Romans or a hawk, one of the sacred animals associated with Mercury - with his arm around its neck, all upon an integral spool-shaped base. A fabulous piece that has developed a rich, dark green patina. Size: 1.1" W x 2.625" H (2.8 cm x 6.7 cm) Mercury was one of the major Classical deities, the patron god of financial success and commerce, as well as eloquence and poetry. He was a trickster god, and he also acted as a psychopomp, leading souls to the underworld. Ovid wrote that Mercury also carried Morpheus's dreams from the valley of Somnus to sleeping humans. For these reasons, he came to be seen as the "keeper of boundaries," forming a bridge between the upper and lower worlds. He also fulfilled that role by acting as a messenger for the other gods. According to Caesar, he was the most popular god in Britain and Gaul, where he was syncretized with the Germanic god Wotan and considered to be the inventor of all arts. Published: J.
