拍品描述
Description Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A finely cast leaded bronze Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, depicted in the nude, standing in contrapposto with her right leg bent at the knee, arranging her hair in two skeins, one held in each of her upraised hands. The goddess tilts her head slightly to the right gazing in that direction, her visage presenting delicate features, including round concave eyes that perhaps once held inlays, arched brows, an aquiline nose, heart-shaped lips, and soft fleshy cheeks - all topped by wavy, twisted tendrils that frame her face, with her centrally parted coiffure drawn into a chignon at the back, as she holds/pulls two thick skeins emerging from it. Size: 1.1" W x 3.6" H (2.8 cm x 9.1 cm); 4.6" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand. Worth noting are her ample hips and full form, an indication that Classical beauty standards were very different from the modern "Twiggy-esque" supermodel ideal. Take another look at Praxiteles' infamous "Aphrodite of Knidos" (ca. 360-330 BCE) and you will see that she has a soft belly and several dimples on her back. What's more, the anatomy of the "Lely's Venus" (ca. 100 to 199 CE) also displays voluptuous folds and rolls. A breathtaking sculptural representation of the goddess whose sublime beauty legendarily inspired much rivalry among the gods, not to mention countless depictions throughout art history, among the most famous, the Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" (1484-86), Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens' "Judgement of Paris" (ca. 1636), and of course, Attic sculptor Praxiteles's "Aphrodite of Knidos" (ca. 360-330 BCE) as well as the equally famous "Lely's Venus" (ca. 100 to 199 CE). Provenance: ex L.G. collection, acquired from Royal Athena in 1987; exhibited at Picker Art Gallery, Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, USA, 1987 to 2006 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
