18TH CENTURY"The animal is carved standing foursquare with its head turned to one side, its long facial features well defined. The saddle blanket is incised with a shou symbol in a roundel above pendant tassels.2 in. (5 cm.) wide"Elephants feature prominently in in Buddhist and Hindu iconography and scripture. In a Chinese art context, they symbolise prudence, wisdom and strength. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, elephants came to be associated with imperial celebrations and as such, four impressive life-size stone elephant carvings can be seen at the Sacred Way, leading to the Imperial tombs. The current jade elephant carving is a reflection of the appreciation of elephants in wider society and can be used as inspiration to contemplate ones own strengths.
