(when rolled in fitted box)""Daitetsu Soto (1765-1828) was the 430th abbot of the Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto. The temple was founded in the early 14th century and has served as the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Three pounds of flax references an early Buddhist text, The Gateless Gate, by Wumen Huikai (1183-1260), a renowned Chinese Zen master from the Song period who compiled and wrote commentaries on a collection of 48 paradoxes (koan). In the 18th paradox, Dongshan Liangjie (807–869), also known as Tozan Ryokai in Japanese, explains that when a monk asked him “What is Buddha?”, he replied “Three pounds of flax!”, stressing the inexpressible nature of Buddha. The inscription reads:""Three pounds of flax; Daito Kokushi said this: In utter coldness as if the wood has pierced into the rock, I sit under the slanting moon to meditate until dawn overcoming hindrances; chilly clouds are accompanied by a penetrating quietude, the gushing splash of a waterfall heard somewhere along with a sudden thundering.""Daito Kokushi (1282-1338) was the second patriarch and founder of Daitoku-ji Temple."
