Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, late 19th/early 20th centuryThe incense burner of compressed ovoid form with a straight-sided neck applied with comma-shaped handles, the vessel set on tripod feet and decorated in colored enamels and aventurine with lappet panels of dragons and phoenix below floral lozenges and foliate scroll on a gray-green ground, the domed cover ending in a chrysanthemum finial; the small baluster vase worked in colored enamels and silver wire with lappet panels of dragons and phoenix and butterflies in flowering vines, all on a dark brown ground 4 1/4in (10.7cm); 7 3/8in (19.6cm) high
