Born in Typton, Iowa, Bertha Boynton Lum first visited Japan during her honeymoon in 1903 and became fascinated with traditional woodblock printing. She honed her skills over several further visits and in 1912 was the only female artist to exhibit at the Tokyo International Exhibition; she also showed her work at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition and, in 1920, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
