ProvenanceFrank Gair Macomber (1849-1941), Boston, and thence by descentFrank Gair Macomber owned a major insurance business and was a leading art patron in America during the late 19th and early 20th century. He collected primarily medieval and Renaissance art with a particular focus on Old Masters paintings, including works by Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck. In 1916, his extensive arms and armor collection was acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art to create the Armor Court. Macomber was also a notable collector of Asian Art. His renowned collection of early Chinese pottery was acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1913. He also sold major collections of Near Eastern and Japanese art in sales held at the American Art Association, New York, in 1924 and 1936.
