Cecil Beaton (British, 1904–1980); Portrait of Joe Namuth, April 1967; gelatin silver print signed, titled and dated in pencil on the reverse. Good condition; some creasing to corners. Height 9 inches (23 cm.) X width 12 inches (30.4 cm.). Provenance: Estate of Robert Prairie; ex. coll. Robert La Vine (both assistants of Beaton's in NYC - helped organize Beaton's first Museum show, "Cecil Beaton: 600 Faces" Museum of the City of New York, 1969, where vintage prints were pasted to the wall of the museum for the duration of the show (traces of adhesive on the reverse) and left by Beaton as scrap. At the time there was no difference between vintage prints and reprints, the value of an image resting with the negative. Hence Sotheby's auctions of Beaton's vintage images believing the value lie in reprints from the negatives that Sotheby's received with the vintage prints.)
