Uncut Informal Robe, China, late 19th century, fashioned as a table cover, embroidered with five distinct scenes incorporating cranes, pine trees, peonies, and other auspicious symbols in satin stitch on a dark blue silk ground, with a contrasting trim, wd. to 42 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
