A boxwood netsuke of a greyhound. 18th centurySeated with its head turned to the side, with a curled tail and a bell on its wide collar. Finely carved and polished, the original black staining rubbed away except for on the breast and the edge of the tail. Inscribed Masakazu.The clear older age of this piece, probably from the 18th century, stands against the Nagoya School and the dating of 1810-40. Moreover, it was probably originally covered with a black patina. The extent of the rubbing is only feasible on a netsuke from the 18th century and accordingly well used. The previous owner Walter Behrens also expressed doubt on the authorship of the Kyoto School with the remark 'it looks too old for Masakazu'. Height 7 cmProvenanceCollection Walter L. Jh. entstanden ist. überdies war es ursprünglich wohl vollkommen schwarz patiniert. Das Ausma? des Abriebs ist nur vorstellbar bei einem Netsuke, das schon im 18. Jahrhundert entstand und entsprechend viel getragen wurde.
