The form of this ewer comes from Tibetan metalwork; because the top reminded Chinese patrons of the hats worn by Tibetan monks, it was given the name “monk’s cap ewer” (sengmaohu).
The ewer is elegantly potted with a bulbous body raised on a short splayed foot, below a curved handle with a ruyi-head tab, decorated with medallions of floral and scrolling lotus all above a suspended ruyi-head band with further lotus and encircling Tibetan inscription, with wide strap handle also painted with ruyi, and a jewelled lappet band encircling the ring foot.
