E. Howard & Co. Hall Clock Movement and Dial with Ratchet Wind, Boston, c. 1887, time and gong-strike eight-day movement marked "E. Howard & Co./Boston," powered by two brass-cased weights and regulated by a wooden rod pendulum with a brass-faced bob, movement wound by pulling a cord connected to a spring ratchet, electroplated composite brass dial with 12-in roman numeral chapter ring and seconds bit, attached maker's boss marked "E. Howard & Co./Boston," all mounted to an iron bracket, ht. of movement only 14 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of a clock repairman from Whitesville, New York. Note: The following was recorded in an E. Howard & Co. ledger from the Smithsonian Institution donated by Dana Blackwell, reading "1887 Apr. 22 Ship to E.F. Willetts, Hornellsville, N.Y. 1 Hall striking Mov't, 12in Electro. dial, polished weights, brass pend. bob, wooden rod. Wire gong to strike hours only. To be fitted to wall by purchaser. Both weights to be wound by cord and spring ratchet as Astor (?) House clock because clock is to be so placed they cannot get at dial to wind it but can set it by a pole.
