He studied at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart,Inspired by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and later Henri Matisse Nauen developed his own style based on the Fauves and the Expressionists with color beeing the overriding principle.. He socialized with other artists such as Heinrich Campendonk, the ''Brücke''-painters Emil Nolde and Erich Heckel, the ''Blauer Reiter''artist group, but also with many gallery-owners and collectors such as the art historian and pioneer of modernism Walter Kaesbachs. In 1921 he was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf art academy but .the National Socialists forced him to resign in 1937. His paintings as well as some works by his wife Marie von Malachowski-Naue were defamed in the National Socialists' 'Degenerate Art' exhibition. After his dismission Nauen moved to Kalkar, where he died in 1941.
