An impressive early Victorian silver twin-handled and lidded champagne cooler or vase, the baluster body decorated in relief with various foliage above stylised stiff leaf borders and a circular footed base further embellished with leaf motifs, each handle moulded as entwined branches and applied with a putto figure holding a wreath in his outstretched arm, the removable lid with repeated stiff leaf borders and surmounted with the seated figure of Lady Justice. Hallmarked Edward, Edward junior, John & William Barnard, London 1839. Maximum height 17.5 (44.5cm), gross weight 105.67 ozt (3287 grams). Appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some general expected surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.A few surface dints and bumps.Interior heavily tarnished and stained. Also interior of lid heavily tarnished and some residues of gilding. One putto with damage and repairs, flood of solder visible to one leg. This same putto no longer fixed to handle and will require some attention as evidence of a previous repair. There is also a break in the wreath. Other putto is still fixed to handle but also requires attention as it is very loose. Lid appears a fairly good fit. Hallmarked to base and repeated to the interior of lid with further part hallmarks to both putto and Lady Justice. Lady Justice further marked with a French guarantee mark alongside the hallmarks. Additionally a further mark alongside both sets of main hallmarks, probably also French. Foot rim further engraved 'Emanuel Brothers 5 Hanover Square'
