拍品描述
A RARE AND MASSIVE IMARI ‘DRAGON AND PHOENIX’ CHARGER, MEIJI PERIOD, LATE 19TH CENTURY 明治時代 19世紀晚期 海山製 伊萬里燒龍鳳大盤 With gently sloped sides, decorated over the surface with vibrant and detailed depictions of a phoenix and a dragon, a traditional symbol of marriage and union, diameter 24.8" — 63 cm. Provenance: Acquired from the Estate of Alexander McDonald, and thence by descent within the family Alexander McDonald (1836-1910) was a Scottish-born American industrialist and president of Standard Oil of Kentucky. This piece was displayed in his summer residence, Dalvay-by-the-Sea, on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The house was constructed in 1895-1896, and was named after McDonald’s boyhood home in Scotland. The grand home was furnished with pieces acquired during extensive family travels abroad, and it was often the venue of lavish parties and dances. Dalvay-by-the-Sea is now a National Historic Site of Canada, and was visited by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge during their 2011 Royal Tour of Canada. Exhibited: Featured in the 2006 ORIGINS Exhibition at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown, which was mounted to accompany the launch of Dr. Hung-Min Chiang’s book “Chinese Islanders: Making a Home in the New World”
