Signed and dated. Restoration to top left. 15 x 18,5 cm; 32,5 x 38 cm. (frame). AIVAZOVSKY was one of the most important Russian painters of C19th, a magnificent landscapist, specialising in seascapes and coastal scenes, in fact those made up more than half his works. After completing his studies at The Imperial Academy of Arts, he travelled to Europe and lived in Italy for a while at the beginning of 1840. He subsequently returned to Russia where he was contracted as principle painter to the Navy. These days his work can be seen in such important museums as The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg or the Gallery Aivazovsky in Ukraine.
