Kiseleva and I Ignatova. 90 x 135 cm. Koester began his artistic training in 1885 at the hand of Karl Hoff and CLaus Leyer in the Academy Karlsruhe. In 1891 he moved travelled to Kalusen , wher he painted many landscapes and discovered that his real forté lay in portraits of ducks which theme became enormously popular very quickly. This obsession with the painting of ducks led to him being known as "Ducky Koester", as this type of painting was most prized on the art market, with the general rule that , "the more ducks, the higher the price", which is why the number is always specified in the title. In 1902 the painter received a gold medal for the painting Ducks in the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, at the World Fair in St Louis.
