This jade war horse is from the Zhou period (1046-256 BCE) and predates the famous galloping bronze horse of Gansu museum.
The galloping bronze horse stepping over flying swallow is a symbol of China’s tourism.
While the composition and galloping style of this jade horse is similar to the Gansu bronze horse, the body design, including the war head ware, nose and neck guards, are reminiscent of the western and nomadic influence.
The folk lore of the Turkestan war horses that can travel faster than the flying swallow has been of intensive research. War horses are treasures of noble warriors.
They were often buried with the deceased.
Sometimes bronze horses and less common jade horses were also buried with the dead.
