This lot is a pair of paintings depicting the highest powers in China back in Qing Dynasty. The first is the emperor, second is the empress. Both are dressed in formal attires and sitting solemnly. In ancient China, the emperor is compared as the dragon, the empress as the phoenix, both of these cultural references can be clearly seen in the back screen, the clothing patterns, and almost everywhere else in the paintings.
