A three-case lacquer inroEdo period (1615-1868), 18th centuryIn the form of a Chinese rectangular ink-cake carved on the edges with simulated chips, carved on one side with characters Horodai (Precious Dew Tower) in a central reserve surrounded by a frieze of ancient musical instruments and other motifs, on the other side with a ceremonial vessel known in Chinese as tanting, the interior cases black lacquer with fundane edges, signed on the underside Ritsuo and a red-lacquer seal Kan 3in (7.7cm) high
