Walt Disney (American, 1901-1966) was an innovative animator and producer who created Mickey Mouse, Pinocchio, Dumbo, and other beloved American cartoons. Born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, IL, Disney studied art as a teenager at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In his early 20s, he moved to Hollywood and along with his brother Roy opened the Disney Brothers Studio, which was later renamed Walt Disney Studios. His Steamboat Willie cartoon from 1928, was the first ever cartoon to feature sound and music. From that point onward, Disney’s career took off, leading him to become the most successful cartoonist in history. During his prolific life, he won a record-breaking 26 Academy Awards. “We have created characters and animated them in the dimension of depth, revealing through them to our perturbed world that the things we have in common far outnumber and outweigh those that divide us,” he said of his work. A heavy smoker throughout his life, Disney died of lung cancer on December 15, 1966 in Burbank, CA.
