Japan. Edo period. 17th c. a) Teabowl from Hagi stoneware with transparent, partly finely crazed glaze. Tea deposits and discoloured in the style of Amamori. The hissen shape, also called fude-arai, derives from a brush washing vessel, the rim of which is shaped in such a way that a brush laid down for drying will not roll down. Footring in wari kodai form with four notches. H. 6.9cm, ? 12.4cm. In silk bag (shifuku). Matching wooden box, lacquered over fabric, inside lined with donzu silk, cord guide offset with shakudo at the bottom. b) Unusual summer bowl in the shape of an awabi snail. Japan. 20th c. Creme colored body, covered with the typical red raku iron engobe and glazed transparent. Outside with black carbon spots. H.5,3cm, ? 16cm. Underneath two seals: ?? ji (temple). Condition A/B.
