Peter IV of Portugal, son of John VI of Portugal and Carlotta Gioacchina of Borbone-Spain was nominated by his father, regent of Brazil in 1821. Proclaimed Independence the following year, he assumed the title of Emperor of Brazil with the name of Peter I until 1831, when he abdicated in favor of his son Peter II.
