TSUBA WITH THE SEVEN WORTHIES OF THE BAMBOO GROVE
Iron and iroe-takazogan, Japan, 19th cent., HEIGHT 7,3 CM
Circular iron tsuba with raised mimi and two hitsu. On both sides is pictured in embossed relief the group of the seven poets, literati and musicians who met together in a grove of bamboos, what was about the third century AD. They all delighted the drinking of wine, discussion and took pleasure in music. On one side of the tsuba are shown four of these worthies, two of them are just studying a long scroll, on the opposite three others of this club. Some high mountains in the surrounding.
