Large colorful painting with gold on textile. India, 1st third 20th cent.
A deep blue, elaborate, bejewelled Krishna, the eighth incarnation of the high god Vishnu, stands straight indicating a dance movement with a raised hand side-by-side next to Gopis (shepherd girl) - although she is richly adorned and dressed here. The background is composed by windmill sails, flapping banana tree leaves as well as blossoming trees, full moon and stars above, also two golden bird ships, each flying with a Raja with spouse. Below is a herd of white cattle, the little Krishna motif is repeated in the same pose in surrounding fields, each accompanied by two girls, richly figurative, while simply dressed. Outer circulating floral border. Condition is good throughout.
