Wood, Japan, late 19th cent. to Taisho
Rakkan are Buddha students, called in Sanskrit Arhat and in China Luohan. The only obvious feature are the long ears in the art of Buddha as well as the mostly bald head, in this sculpture framed by curls. Eyebrows, lips and chin-beard are carved curly. Artistically the carving technique is here applied in a free manner, even if the facial expression, especially through the eyes, is rather precise. Patina as well as presum. painting with black India ink. Tall square conical base with veneer.
HEIGHT 24,4 CM (with base 36,4 CM)
