Cotton. Burma/Myanmar, 1st half 20th Cent.
176 x 101 cm
A handwoven textile of the Naga.
The Naga is one of the largest tribal folk groups in Southeast Asia and live partly in Burma and India, mostly in hardly accessible regions. Up into the 1980′s, some clans were still headhunters. Western civilization is barely known there in many areas.
The present weaving comes from an Austrian collection and was acquired locally about 20-30 years ago. Particularly noteworthy about all Naga cloth is the radiant, spirited contrast of the color design in the patterns, which evolved over many generations. In impeccable condition, this attractive, supple textile is compactly woven and very well suitable as wall decor or blanket. It may be carefully washed in cold/lukewarm water. Flawless condition.
