This painting was done in 1950, after World War 2 and in keeping with many of his paintings of Christological scenes there is a bright, scarlet red figure within the painting, hinting at his own distaste for the Soviet Union and its perceived failures. Goats in the New Testament are symbolic of wicked men and oppressors while in the Old Testament the scapegoat, or sacrificial goat that came to represent Christ later on, is the more common interpretation. In this case it could be argued that the red goat is both symbolic of the wicked men of the Soviet Government and the people sacrificed to the rule of said government, all under a red flag. “For me, Christ has always symbolized the true type of the Jewish martyr.
