Ancient Bronze Axe Heads - Warring States + Dong Son

拍品描述: Southeast Asia, Viet Nam, Dong Son culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A cast bronze axe head with a crescent moon shaped blade and an open socket with two perforations for mounting on wooden shaft. Boasts a beautiful green patina with some exposed areas of red-brown patina. Size: 4.375" (11.1 cm).

Far East, China, Warring States, ca. 403 to 222 CE. Another cast bronze axe head, this one created during the Warring States period. The axe boasts a tapered form with an open socket with perforations and a ribbed base. It too would have been mounted on a wooden shaft. Size: 5" (12.7 cm).

The metalsmiths of both the ancient Chinese Warring States period and the Vietnamese Dong Son cultures were known for high precision and advanced metallurgy. Two fine examples!

Both pieces come from the esteemed collection of ancient weaponry and bronzes from the late expert John Piscopo. During his lifetime, Mr. Piscopo amassed an impressive ensemble of swords, knives, axes, daggers, and other weapons from ancient Greece, Rome, the Middle East, China, Southeast Asia, and many other lands. A knowledgeable connoisseur with a keen eye, Mr. Piscopo understood how to discern between reproductions and authentic weaponry. Given the vast number of fakes on the market offered to unsuspecting collectors, Mr. Piscopo took special care to assure that his collection only included genuine pieces. What’s more, he stood on the frontlines of the fight to stop the illicit looting of historical sites.

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
