2016年01月29日 开拍
拍品描述
Africa, DR Congo, Shaba District, Hemba tribe, late 19th to early 20th century CE. This wooden Hemba mask was carved to imitate a monkey face featuring a prominent, crescent shaped mouth with no teeth showing, slanted eyes, and a long pointed nose. ?The function and meaning of these masks is still unclear to scholars. ?Some theories suggest that the animated expressions of these masks may evoke a beneficiary spirit. Striking form and deep hues. ?Nice patina. Size: 5.25" W x 7.25" H (13.3 cm x 18.4 cm).

Provenance: Ex-estate pf Dr. Peter Arnovick Collection, Los Altos, CA
