拍品描述: Far East, Japan, Edo to Meiji period, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A Japanese netsuke hand carved from African ivory of a remarkably complicated composition. This example depicts a man perched atop an ox while holding a large fish. The ox is favored in Japanese art as it is a member of the Chinese zodiac and is also associated with the parable of the ox and the herder. This Zen tale symbolizes a man who is in effect taming his own spirit. In Japan, the fish symbolizes living in a state of fearlessness, freedom, well being, and happiness. It is one of eight auspicious symbols that were brought to Japan from China. Metaphorically the fish signifies acting courageously without any danger of drowning amidst the seas of suffering. A rather special netsuke boasting an intricate composition replete with layers of meaning! Perforations at bottom and back for suspension. Size: 1.5" W x 1.75" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm)

The traditional kimono had no pockets. While women could tuck away small personal items in their sleeves, men suspended their treasured possessions (tobacco pouches, pipes, purses or writing implements and the like) called sagemono on a silk cord, hanging from their obi (sash). In order to stop the cord from slipping through the obi, a small toggle called a netsuke was attached.

This lot will be accompanied by a signed affidavit from the client that this object was in the United States prior to January 18, 1990, and is to the best of their knowledge and ability made prior to February 26, 1976 in accordance with Federal law. Ivory cannot be shipped out of the United States or to New York or California. African elephant ivory.

Provenance: Ex-Paul and Louise Bernheimer, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA; All ivory items in the collection pre-date 1900 and were acquired long before the 1970 ban on ivory trade.
