19th C. Arctic Native Peoples Bone Spoon w/ Reindeer
科罗拉多
2016年01月29日 开拍
拍品描述
Arctic, most likely Sami from northern Scandinavia, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. This is a beautiful bone spoon with the large, pear-shaped bowl engraved with a scrimshaw reindeer (or, if North American, the caribou) and a delicately shaped and pierced stem; there are three small carved bone rings looped through the stem. Along with objects such as scraping tools, knives, digging sticks, and baskets, bone spoons were one of the major personal items that were carried by native people throughout the Arctic. Many Sami lived as semi-nomadic reindeer herders until the modern era, and the reindeer provided them with meat, fur, and transportation, making it the most important animal in their culture. Size: 5" L x 1.8" W (12.7 cm x 4.6 cm).

Provenance: Estate of Paul & Louise Bernheimer
